History of Addison, Pennsylvania
Addison, Pennsylvania is a small borough located in the south-central part of the state. The area was first settled by Native Americans prior to the arrival of Europeans in the late 17th century. In 1768, a group of Scotch-Irish immigrants led by Andrew Addison acquired several thousand acres of land in what is now Addison and established a settlement.
The town was officially founded in 1812 and named after Andrew Addison. The early settlers were mainly farmers who grew wheat and other grains on their farms as well as raising cattle and horses. In addition to farming, they also operated sawmills, grist mills, tanneries and other businesses.
In 1817, the first church was built in Addison, a Presbyterian church which is still standing today. By 1820, there were over 500 people living in the borough and it had become an important stop along the stagecoach route between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
In 1854, the first schoolhouse was built followed by several more over the next few decades as Addison’s population continued to grow. By 1900, there were nearly 1,500 people living here and more businesses began to open up including hotels, banks, stores and factories that manufactured clothing and cigars among other things.
Throughout much of the 20th century, Addison remained a small but vibrant community with several churches serving its residents as well as various businesses providing employment opportunities for many local residents.
In recent years, though it has seen some decline due to changes in economic conditions both locally and nationally with many businesses closing or relocating elsewhere leaving fewer job opportunities for citizens here. Despite this though it still remains an attractive place to live with its scenic views of surrounding mountains coupled with its close proximity to larger cities such as Pittsburgh making it an ideal location for those looking for a quieter lifestyle away from urban areas yet still within easy reach of them when needed.
