History of Adena, Ohio
Adena, Ohio is a small village located in Harrison County, Ohio. It was founded in 1831 by William and Abigail Adena, who were among the first settlers to the area. The Adena family came from Virginia, and were looking for a new place to call home. The town was named after them.
At first, Adena was a small farming community with only a few hundred people living there. The main cash crop for the farmers in the area was wheat, which they sold to nearby towns and cities. As more settlers arrived, other industries such as logging and mining began to spring up around the village. This brought more jobs and an influx of people into Adena.
In 1848, railroad tracks were laid through Adena which allowed for better transportation of goods and services between it and other towns in the region. This made it easier for farmers to get their goods to market, which helped boost the local economy. As more people moved into the area, businesses began popping up around town such as general stores, banks and hotels.
The early 20th century saw continued growth in Adena due to increased industrialization in the area as well as new immigrants coming from Europe seeking work opportunities here. During this time period there were also several educational institutions established including Adena High School which opened its doors in 1921 and has since been recognized as one of Ohio’s top high schools with an excellent academic program and strong athletic teams.
Adena has continued to grow over time with more businesses coming into town such as restaurants, grocery stores and shops that offer goods from all over the world making it a great place for locals to find what they need without having to travel too far away from home. Today Adena is home to nearly 1,000 residents who enjoy all that this small village has to offer while still having access to bigger cities nearby like Steubenville or Cadiz if they need them.
