History of Albany, Missouri
Albany, Missouri is a small town located in Gentry County, Missouri. It has a population of around 1,100 people and was established in 1871 by the railroads. The town was named after Albany, New York due to the fact that the first settlers to the area were from that region.
The early history of Albany is closely tied to the railroads as this was how people and goods were transported into and out of town. The Chicago & Alton Railroad had been built through Albany in 1871 and this helped to spur growth in the area. By 1880 there were over 500 people living in Albany and several businesses had opened up including a hotel, two general stores, a grain elevator and other small businesses.
Albany also saw some growth during World War I when many young men from Albany enlisted in the armed forces to serve their country abroad. After the war ended, many veterans returned home with newfound ideas about business and industry which helped spur on economic development in the area. This included new businesses such as sawmills, brickyards and other manufacturing plants which provided employment opportunities for local residents.
In addition to business growth, education also played an important role in Albany’s history. In 1889, a high school was established which allowed students from all over Gentry County to attend classes there. This eventually led to the creation of North Central Missouri College (now known as Truman State University) which opened its doors for students in 1929.
Today, Albany is still a small town with most of its population living below poverty level but it remains an important part of Gentry County’s history. The town hosts several annual festivals including an Apple Festival each fall which celebrates its agricultural heritage while also promoting local businesses and organizations within the community. There are also several historical sites located throughout Albany including old churches and homes which showcase the city’s past while providing insight into what life was like here hundreds of years ago.
