Albion, Illinois is a small town located in Edwards County in the southwestern part of the state. With a population of around 3,000 people, it is one of the smaller towns in the area. History of Albion, Illinois
Albion, Illinois is a small city situated in the northeastern corner of Edwards County. It was founded in 1818 and incorporated in 1853. The town was named after Albion, New York and was originally settled by Quakers from the eastern United States who were attracted to the area’s abundant natural resources.
Albion has a long and rich history that began with its founding. In 1818, William Davis and his son, Jesse, became the first settlers of Albion. They built a log cabin on their property which eventually became the center of the town. During this time, Albion mainly served as an agricultural community with many farmers growing wheat, corn, oats and other grains on their farms.
In 1853, Albion officially became an incorporated village with a population of around 800 people. At this time there were several businesses in Albion including stores, blacksmiths and even a newspaper called The Albion Enterprise which began publishing in 1860. The railroad arrived shortly after in 1868 which brought rapid growth to the area as more people moved to Albion for work opportunities.
By 1900, Albion had grown to over 1,500 people and had become an important regional hub for trade due to its location at a junction of two major railroads. With this increased economic activity came further development such as new churches and schools as well as new businesses such as hotels and banks that helped make life more comfortable for residents during this era.
Throughout the 20th century into present day, Albion has continued to grow albeit at a slower pace than prior decades due to its rural location which has limited access to larger cities nearby. Despite this however it remains an important part of Edwards County’s economy due largely to its agricultural roots that continue to be strong today with many local farms still operating throughout the region.
Today Albion is home to just over 1,000 people who enjoy small-town living while being surrounded by beautiful natural scenery such as rolling hillsides covered in lush vegetation and picturesque streams running through them all year round making it a great place for outdoor activities like fishing or camping out under starry night skies on summer evenings.
