History of Albion, Michigan

Albion, Michigan is a small city located in Calhoun County in the south-central region of the state. It was founded in 1835 by settlers from New York and Pennsylvania who were looking for a new home. The city was named after Albion, New York by its first settler, John D. Pierce, who had lived there before coming to Michigan.

The early years of Albion were filled with hard work and determination as the settlers worked to clear the land and build homes. By 1844, the population had grown to over 500 people and businesses had begun to emerge including a blacksmith shop, sawmill, brickyard and woolen mill.

In 1850, Albion was officially incorporated as a village but it wasn’t until 1866 that it achieved city status. During this period of growth, many public buildings were constructed including two churches (Presbyterian and Methodist) as well as an opera house and library. In addition to these buildings, the city also boasted several manufacturing companies such as the Albion Malleable Iron Works which opened in 1870.

Albion continued to grow throughout the late 19th century with new businesses popping up along its main streets such as stores selling clothing, furniture and hardware goods. By 1900 there were over 4500 people living in Albion and several newspapers were being published including The Albion Recorder which is still published today.

In 1901, Albion College was founded at this time by Methodists from New York who wanted to bring higher education opportunities to the area. The college has grown significantly over the years with more than 2200 students currently enrolled from all across America and abroad.

Albion has continued its growth into modern times with new businesses opening up such as restaurants and shops on its main street while preserving its historic architecture dating back hundreds of years ago.
