The area that would become Alexander City was first settled by the Creek Indians in the early 1800s. After the Creek were forced to relocate to Oklahoma following the Indian Removal Act of 1830, white settlers began moving into the area. In 1842, John T. Alexander purchased land along Lake Martin and established Alexander City as a trading post. History of Alexander City, Alabama
Alexander City, Alabama is a city located in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. It was originally founded in 1872 by two entrepreneurs from Georgia, Reuben S. McCrary and J.T. Alexander, who were looking to capitalize on the fertile soil and abundant water resources of the area. The city was named for J.T. Alexander and was officially incorporated in 1883 with a population of about 300 people at the time.
Alexander City has experienced steady growth since its founding, with its population more than doubling between 1890 and 1900 to nearly 1,500 people. By 1910 it had grown to over 2,000 people and by 1930 it had reached nearly 3,500 residents. This growth was due largely to the booming timber industry that developed in the region during this time period as well as increased agricultural production on local farms and plantations.
