History of Alliance, North Carolina

Alliance, North Carolina is a small town in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was first settled in 1757 by a group of Quaker settlers from Pennsylvania who were looking for a place to practice their faith without persecution. The town was named Alliance because of the sense of unity and fellowship among these settlers.

The town quickly grew as more settlers moved to the area and began farming, logging, and raising livestock. By 1820 there were over 200 people living in Alliance and by 1850 that number had grown to nearly 500.

In 1859, Alliance became part of McDowell County when it was formed from parts of Burke and Rutherford counties. During this time Alliance continued to grow as more people moved into the area seeking economic opportunity. By 1880 there were over 700 people living in Alliance and by 1900 that number had grown to nearly 1,000 people.

The early 20th century saw significant growth for Alliance as new industries such as textiles, furniture manufacturing, and timber production flourished in the area. This period also saw an influx of African American workers who came to find employment opportunities with these new industries. By 1950 there were over 2,000 people living in Alliance with many African Americans making up a large portion of the population.

Today, Alliance is still a small but vibrant community with many businesses and organizations dedicated to preserving its history while at the same time embracing its future growth potentials.
