History of Alpena, South Dakota

Alpena, South Dakota is a small town in Aurora County. It was established in 1882 and named after the city of Alpena, Michigan. The population of Alpena is just under 200 people, making it one of the smallest towns in the county.

The first settlers to arrive in Alpena were primarily of German descent who had come from the Midwest looking for new land to homestead on. They quickly established small farms and businesses which helped to create a modest economy for the area. As more settlers arrived, they built churches and schools which further contributed to the growth of Alpena.

In 1884, a post office was established and it served as an important hub for communication between nearby towns and cities as well as with those living further away. The railroad also played an important role in connecting Alpena with other parts of South Dakota by bringing goods and passengers to town. This allowed for more economic opportunities to arise such as stores, saloons, and hotels which all helped to make Alpena a thriving community by 1900.

Throughout its history, Alpena has remained primarily an agricultural town but has also seen some industry over time such as grain elevators, coal mines, brickyards, and other businesses related to agriculture or manufacturing. In recent years, tourism has become an increasingly important part of the local economy with many visitors coming from nearby cities or even further away just to experience the unique character that makes up this small town.

Today, Alpena is still a close-knit community with many longtime residents who have been part of its history since before it was even founded over 130 years ago. Despite its size it continues to be an important part of Aurora County’s history and culture, providing locals with a sense of community that cannot be found anywhere else.
