History of Andrews, South Carolina
Andrews, South Carolina is a small town located in Georgetown County, and is home to around 1,500 people. The area was first settled in the late 1700s by farmers and fishermen who were attracted to the abundance of natural resources available in the region. The town was officially established in 1809, when it was granted a post office.
The early settlers of Andrews were mainly Scottish immigrants who had come to the United States in search of religious freedom. They brought with them their own culture and traditions, which are still evident today. The town soon became an important hub for trade and commerce due to its strategic location on the Black River.
Throughout much of its history, Andrews has been a primarily agricultural town, with many of its citizens working as farmers or fishermen. In the early 20th century, however, industry began to move into the area as well, with several textile mills being established along the banks of the river. This allowed many residents to find employment outside of agriculture for the first time in Andrews’ history.
In recent years, tourism has become an important part of Andrews’ economy as well. The town is home to two popular state parks – Huntington Beach State Park and Brookgreen Gardens – which attract thousands of visitors each year from all over South Carolina and beyond. Additionally, many locals work in hospitality or retail businesses that cater to tourists coming through Andrews each year.
Despite its small size and rural location, Andrews has remained an active community throughout its history thanks largely to its close-knit population and strong sense of tradition and identity among its residents. This can be seen through events such as the annual Frogmore Stew Festival held each October which celebrates local seafood cuisine; or through organizations like Friends of Georgetown County which works towards preserving local history sites and monuments; or even through simple things like Saturday night bingo games at one of Andrews’ churches – something that has been a staple in this community for decades now.
