History of Anna Maria, Florida
Anna Maria, Florida is a small city located on the northern tip of Anna Maria Island on the Gulf of Mexico. It is part of Manatee County and has a population of just over 1,800 people. The city was first settled in the late 19th century by William and Mary Ross who homesteaded the area in 1892.
The settlement was originally known as “Ross’ Landing” but it was soon renamed to Anna Maria after William and Mary’s daughter-in-law. In 1921, it became an official city when it was incorporated by the state legislature.
In the early 20th century, Anna Maria began to grow rapidly due to its proximity to Tampa Bay and St Petersburg. It quickly became a popular tourist destination for wealthy families from these cities looking for a relaxing beach getaway. Many elegant homes were built along the shoreline which remains an iconic feature of Anna Maria today.
The city also became known for its fishing industry with many boats departing from its harbor each day to fish in the Gulf of Mexico. This industry continued to thrive until World War II when many of the fishermen enlisted in the armed forces or had their boats requisitioned by the US Navy. After the war ended, fishing resumed but never reached its pre-war levels due to increased competition from other areas such as St Petersburg and Clearwater that had also become popular tourist destinations.
In recent years, Anna Maria has become an increasingly popular destination for both tourists and retirees seeking a peaceful beach lifestyle away from larger cities like Tampa and St Petersburg. The city has experienced significant development with new restaurants, shops, hotels, condos and other amenities popping up all over town catering to this growing population base.
Anna Maria still maintains much of its original charm however with much of its historic architecture still intact such as City Hall which was built in 1927 and still stands today as one of Anna Maria’s most recognizable landmarks. In addition to this there are also several parks located throughout town that are perfect for enjoying some fresh air or taking part in recreational activities such as kayaking or fishing off one of several piers scattered around town’s waterfront.
